EdiRoute

UX/UI design, Gamification, Data-driven Souvenirs

Ediroute, an app designed for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, that explores the use of digital data to effectively manage overcrowding of the city centre and simultaneously offers an enjoyable and memorable experience through the co-creation of data-driven souvenirs in the form of GPS art.

This design not only addresses city congestion issues but also enhances the tourist experience by introducing gamification elements into urban exploration.

Drawing inspiration from GPS artists in collaboration with a landscape architect Catriona McKellar, we developed a unique map, that contains the venues used for 2019 Edinburgh Fringe as well as predicted future venues , such as schools, art centres and museums.

Features

Personalised City Exploration
Ediroute offers users the ability to select pre-defined routes tailored to their interests and physical capabilities. This feature is augmented with GPS art creation, where users' movements create GPS-based artworks of Scottish symbols, linking festival venues and tourist spots for a culturally immersive experience.

Inclusive Design
The app’s routes vary in difficulty, which is determined by the average number of steps it would take to walk, the average amount of time and take into consideration the terrain of the area to accommodate a wide range of users, including those with limited mobility or families with young children.

Crowd Management
By offering diverse routes, the app helps distribute tourists across the city, reducing overcrowding at popular spots.

Enhanced Navigation with Cultural Integration
Ediroute guides tourists through both popular and lesser-known areas of the city, fostering extensive exploration. The use of Scottish symbols for GPS art not only aids navigation but also integrates cultural elements, enhancing the educational and enjoyable aspects of the journey.
